Insanity! Dare to Dream

Insanity! Dare to Dream

 INSANITY!  Dare to Dream
______________________________

I love the seasons.  For many of us, January 1st marks the beginning of a possible new way of doing things.  New Years resolutions are made for working out, being more organized, working toward the promotion, spending more time with family and friends.  Sometimes this awakening comes in the spring as the weather gets warmer and people come out of hibernation, head outside (at least here in the cold Midwest) and feel renewed.

For me, however, that time comes now, in the fall.  Maybe it’s so many years of back to school and having a fresh start.  I would get my number 2 pencils sharpened, a new pair of school shoes and a trapper-keeper (yes, I’m dating myself here, but many of you are smiling at the thought of trapper-keepers!) I would also make the pledge, “…this year is going to be different.  This year I am not going to wait until the last minute to do my homework.  I’m going to get all my reading done early.  I’m going to stay focused so I don’t have to cram for exams.”

This even translated right into my adult jobs.  “My files will stay organized.  I’m getting a 5 year calendar to better plan.  I’ll be sure to make time for bigger-picture thinking to help the organization move forward.”  Unfortunately, it never takes much time to fall back into our old ways.  The day to day tasks quickly get in the way and another year has passed. It happens to most of us.  A main theme of my clients, my friends, and almost everyone I speak with, is that there’s just too much to do and not enough time.

Albert Einstein had it right…”Insanity – doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”  When is it time to try something different?

Some of you have figured it out on your own.  Most of us own at least one Steven Covey book looking for the keys on productivity and leadership…The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Power of Choice, The Leader in Me, or maybe one of my favorites, First Things First.  Yet, why do we still feel like we’re on the hamster wheel of overwhelm?  We’re continually thinking, ‘…if I can just get through this project, the next big meeting, event, my child’s terrible-two’s, etc., it’ll be different.’  We want to believe that something is going to change, and sometimes it changes for a minute, but we just can’t seem to get a handle on it long term.

So here we are. September 2013.  What would you like to be doing differently?  What do you want more of for yourself and your team?  What might happen if you finally try something different?  Dare to dream!
